At Honeycomb Strategy, we believe in learning by doing. Our interns don’t do busy work and coffee runs, they get stuck into real work that shapes decisions.
So what’s it really like interning at Honeycomb Strategy? We spoke to our two most recent interns Anika and Aidan to find out.
Anika Ryan-Jenne is completing her Master of Applied Psychology at the University of Melbourne. During her time at Honeycomb Strategy, she conducted qualitative analysis across focus groups and interviews, shaped findings into insights presented to clients, and followed research from raw conversation all the way to real-world recommendations.
Aidan Hyde is completing his Bachelor of Marketing and Arts at Monash University. He spent his time identifying impactful quotes from focus groups, reviewing survey results, and suggesting topics for focus group discussions.
What has been the highlight of your time at Honeycomb Strategy?
Anika: I was so surprised, I didn’t feel like an intern at all, which was a nice discovery. My highlight has to be the Tuesday morning breakfasts with the team. It’s such a simple thing but it really set the tone for the week.
Aidan: I really enjoyed the Saint Patrick’s Day event. We had the Irish stew together and then all went for a walk to grab some sweet food afterwards. That was a nice day.
Why did you study Psychology and Marketing?
Anika (Psychology): I’ve always been fascinated by what makes people tick and why people do the things they do. The opportunity to bridge the gap between psychology and marketing came about during my masters, and it felt like a natural fit.
Aidan (Marketing): I’m drawn to understanding why people make the decisions they make. Combining that with business just felt like the right combination for me.
What has surprised you about working here?
Anika: The level of detail and effort that goes into every stage of a project, from the initial planning conversations with a client all the way through to designing the final deliverable. It’s a lot more considered than I expected.
Aidan: The range of clients. I remember walking in on my first day and seeing the project board; there so many different industries. I hadn’t anticipated the variety.
What's something you've learnt?
Anika: How important it is to communicate findings clearly and concisely, and to build a narrative the client can actually follow.
Aidan: I’ve learned a lot about why methods like focus groups and surveys matter so much. I’d often go into one with a demographic I wasn’t familiar with and try to predict what they’d say and you really can’t. You have to let the research lead.
What advice would you give to someone thinking about interning here?
Anika: Just do it. Say yes to everything, throw yourself in, and try to expose yourself to as much as possible. You’ll get out of it what you put in.
Aidan: I didn’t really know what I was getting into, but I found it genuinely interesting. I’d absolutely look into it if you’re considering it.
